Sabeol-guk was one of the small states of the Samhan confederacy, located in the Sangju region of present-day Gyeongsangbuk-do, and was also known as Saryangbeol-guk. According to the Samguk sagi, this state originally belonged to Silla, but suddenly rebelled and submitted to Baekje during the reign of King Jeomhae. In response, Uro led an army to subjugate it and established Sabeol-ju (Sabeol Prefecture). Later, Eonchang, the fifth of the eight sons of King Gyeongmyeong, the fifty-fourth ruler of Silla, was invested as the Grand Prince of Sabeol-ju, styled it Sabeol-guk once more, and ruled the region for eleven years. It subsequently fell in 929 after an invasion by Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje. The Sangju region is said to be a place from which many Bronze Age relics dating from the third to second centuries BC have been unearthed, and it is presumed that, owing to its distinctive geography, a politically organised group formed here relatively earlier than in other parts of Gyeongsangdo.
