Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Heo Yu-jeon (1243–1323), posthumous title Chungmok-gong, a civil official of the reign of King Chungsuk in the late Goryeo period. Heo Yu-jeon was born in 1243, the thirtieth year of King Gojong, passed the state civil examination under King Wonjong, and in 1309, the thirty-fourth year of King Chungnyeol, served as Inspector of Jeolla-do before rising to Miljiksasa, a senior Goryeo court post, and being appointed jigonggeo, the examiner in charge of selecting candidates in the state examinations. In the early years of King Chungsuk's reign he was enfeoffed as Lord of Garak, and in 1321, the eighth year of King Chungsuk, he rose through the post of Sucheomuichanseongsa to become jeongseung, chief state councillor. The tomb had been left abandoned after being looted, until it came to public attention in 1985 through his descendant Heo Gwan-gu. During the excavation of the tomb in June 1988, several fragments of Goryeo celadon cups, dozens of pieces of Goryeo earthenware, several thin bronze fragments, an iron nail from the wooden coffin, and nineteen coins cast in Song- and Jin-dynasty China in the eleventh and twelfth centuries were found, along with skeletal remains including the sacrum. It is presumed that many more burial goods once existed but were lost to looting.
