Ichi is a pass forming the boundary between Wanju and Geumsan. During the Japanese invasions of Korea, in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, Gwon Yul, magistrate of Gwangju, and Hwang Jin, magistrate of Dongbok, together with 1,500 government troops, repelled the forces of the enemy general Kobayakawa here, winning the first victory of the Imjin War. The Battle of Ichi, together with Yi Sun-sin's victory at Hansando Island and Gwon Yul's victory at Haengju, is counted among the three great victories of the Imjin War. In the fierce fighting, which lasted from early morning until dusk, the Korean forces, though outnumbered, were able to defeat a superior enemy thanks to the sincere front-line command of their generals, the indomitable fighting spirit of local militia, thorough preparation making use of the rugged terrain, and an uninterrupted supply of military provisions. The Battle of Ichi, together with the almost simultaneous Battle of Ungchi, broke the momentum of the Japanese forces and kept them from advancing into Jeolla-do, making a tremendous contribution over the following seven years, up to the Japanese invasion of 1597, to the supply of provisions and reinforcements.
