This is the site of the birthplace and grave of Na Dae-yong (pen name Chean, 1556–1612), a renowned general of the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon. After passing the military service examination in 1583, the 16th year of King Seonjo, he took an interest in warship research and spent more than ten years researching, building and testing the turtle ship. In 1591, the 24th year of King Seonjo and one year before the outbreak of the Imjin War, he visited General Yi Sun-sin to discuss the building of turtle ships, and the first three vessels were launched. When the Imjin War broke out, he won great merit in the naval battles of Okpo, Myeongnyang and Noryang, among others, and after the war he invented a new type of warship called the changseon and a fast patrol boat called the haechuseon. In 1611 he was appointed Gyodong-susa, the naval commander overseeing the Gyeonggi navy, but wounds suffered during the war flared up, preventing him from taking up the post, and he died in 1612. Records of him are preserved in the Chungmugong jeonseo, the Nanjung ilgi (War Diary), the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, and other sources. His birthplace, located in Oryong-ri, Munpyeong-myeon, Naju-si, Jeollanam-do, is a south-facing thatched-roof house of four kan across the front and one kan deep, kan being the traditional unit of measurement between pillars; his grave lies at the foot of a hill about 3 km from the village where the birthplace stands.
