Bak Paeng-nyeon Shrine, Chungju
충주 박팽년 사당 · 忠州 朴彭年 祠堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine enshrines the spirit tablet of Bak Paeng-nyeon (1417–1456), a loyal subject of the early Joseon period and one of the Sayuksin, the 'six martyred subjects' who gave their lives trying to restore King Danjong to the throne, and holds memorial rites for him. Bak Paeng-nyeon passed the civil service examination in the 29th year of King Sejong (1447) and became an official of the Hall of Worthies, taking part in compilation projects together with young scholars such as Sin Suk-ju and Yu Seong-won. When Suyang Daegun seized the throne from the young King Danjong, Bak Paeng-nyeon, unable to contain his outrage, tried to take his own life, but was dissuaded by Seong Sam-mun and instead resolved to risk death by planning a movement to restore King Danjong. However, the plot was betrayed by Kim Jil and discovered before it could be carried out. Although King Sejo, who valued his talent, tried to win him over, Bak Paeng-nyeon would not yield, and was executed together with Seong Sam-mun, Ha Wi-ji, Yi Gae and Yu Seong-won. The building standing today was newly restored by Chungju in 1968.
