Chiryeonuichong Tomb
칠연의총 · 七淵義塚

This tomb, in Gongjeong-ri, Anseong-myeon, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk, is the burial place of the righteous-army (uibyeong) leader Sin Myeong-seon and his soldiers, who died fighting the forces of the Japanese colonial period. In 1907, Japan pressured Korea into signing the Jeongmi Treaty of Seven Articles, leading to the disbandment of the Korean army. Unable to contain their fury at Japan's aggression, soldiers of the royal guard infantry led a nationwide anti-Japanese resistance movement. Sin Myeong-seon, an officer who had served in the guard, based himself on Deogyusan Mountain in Muju, Jeonbuk, and raised a righteous army of more than 150 men, fighting Japanese troops in Muju, Jinan, Jangsu and other areas and achieving many successes. In April 1908, after a series of engagements had left the righteous soldiers exhausted, they were resting in a valley of Deogyusan Mountain called Chiryeon when they were ambushed by Japanese troops lying in wait, and the entire unit perished. Local residents gathered the fallen soldiers' remains, built a tomb for them, and named it 'Chiryeonchong.'
