Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGoheung Bowl Pomanhoseong Fortress is centred on Seongchon village in Balpo-ri, Dohwa-myeon, Goheung-gun. A manho was a military post of senior grade 4 rank that the Joseon government dispatched to the various garrisons (jin) of each province. The fortress was built along the coastline to block enemy incursions, and its shape forms a trapezoid. According to the Veritable Records of King Seongjong, the Balpo manho fortress was built in the twenty-first year of King Seongjong's reign (1490), with a circumference of 1,350 cheok (a traditional unit of length) and a height of 13 cheok. Today its circumference measures 560 m and its height 4 m, and the west wall is deeper than the east wall. All four walls — east, west, south and north — largely survive, although the east and south walls are now used as the walls of private houses. Inside the fortress, the sites of government buildings such as the dongheon (the magistrate's main hall) and a guest house remain, along with the sites of a drainage channel and an armoury. The east, west and south gates and the site of a watchtower have also been confirmed. Balpo manho fortress is where Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin served as manho for eighteen months after taking up the post in the thirteenth year of King Seonjo's reign (1580); together with the Yeocheon shipyard site, it carries great historical significance as a naval base under the Jwasuyeong (Left Naval Command) during the Imjin War.
