Gangneungdae Pavilion Gongsanseong Fortress stands on the peak of Daegongsan Mountain in Bogwang-ri, Seongsan-myeon, Gangneung, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and has a perimeter of about 4 km. According to records, the mountain was called Bohyeonsan and the fortress Bohyeonsanseong, with a circumference given as 1,707 cheok, a traditional unit of length. It was built using the natural contours of the mountain range connected to Daegwallyeong, and also links to Geumgangsanseong Fortress in Sogeumgang. The northern wall was built using steep cliffs but has almost entirely collapsed; today a wall about 2 m high survives on the southern side. The southern wall was built with undressed stones, and the sites of gates remain on the east, west and north sides. Inside the fortress is still the site of a well said to have been dug more than 1,000 years ago; according to legend, King Onjo, the founding king of Baekje, built the fortress here after establishing his capital, in order to train his troops. Another legend holds that it was built by the Dae clan, the royal family of Balhae. It was also the site of fierce fighting between Japanese troops and righteous army forces led by Min Yong-ho, centred here during the so-called Eulmi Righteous Army uprising of 1895, the 32nd year of King Gojong of Joseon.
