Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of Yi Geon-chang (1852-1898), pen name Yeongjae, a highly renowned literary stylist and civil official of the late Joseon period. In 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong, he passed the civil service examination at the young age of fifteen, and in 1874, the eleventh year of Emperor Gojong, he was appointed as a seojanggwan (recording secretary on diplomatic missions to China) and later served as a secret royal inspector (amhaengeosa) for the right circuit of Chungcheong Province, among other posts. Because of his uncompromising character, he was exiled three times and pardoned on each occasion. His work Dangeuitongnyak (A Concise Account of Factional Strife) is regarded as a masterpiece that, rising above faction and kinship, describes the causes and course of factional strife from an impartial standpoint. In addition to Dangeuitongnyak, his writings include Myeongmidangjip. The exact date of construction of this building is uncertain, but judging from the woodworking techniques used on its pillars and beams, it is thought to be about a hundred years old. It stands on a foundation of natural stones with cornerstones set upon it, and the whole structure is built on a three-purlin (samnyang) frame, a typical hanok (traditional Korean house) construction. The main quarters (anchae) are L-shaped, with the master bedroom (anbang) and the room across the hall (geonneonbang) flanking the wooden-floored hall (daecheong), and a kitchen placed in front of the master bedroom, a layout typical of ordinary houses in Gyeonggi Province. Right beside the building are the graves of ancestors including Yi Gwang-myeong and Yi Si-won.
