Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the battlefield of Hobeolchi, where righteous militia from the Buan region of Jeolla-do fought Japanese forces during the Jeongyu War in 1597, the thirtieth year of King Seonjo. The place-name Hobeolchi is said to derive from the seventh century, when the Tang Chinese general Su Dingfang landed here and set up his military headquarters in the area of Yujinchi and Juryuseong. Unlike the Imjin War that broke out in 1592, the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo, the Japanese army in the Jeongyu War committed its main force to Jeolla-do and ravaged the region; this time Japanese troops landed by sea at Julpo and advanced on Buan. Chae Heung-guk, who during the Imjin War had already won a great victory over the Japanese army in this region together with ninety-two righteous soldiers, once again rallied an additional thirty-three righteous men of resolve and met the Japanese army at Hobeolchi, but, overwhelmed by superior numbers, all of them fell in battle. The Battle of Hobeolchi is significant as an act of righteous-army resistance in which local scholars, farmers, the lowborn and monks of the region united as one and fought the Japanese army to the last. A monument to the battle, erected in August 1965, now stands at the site.
