A yoji (kiln site) refers to a kiln where porcelain, roof tiles or earthenware vessels were fired. The Joseon-period white porcelain kiln site at Wolsong-ri, Jangheung, has two kilns of identical shape, built 50m apart. It is not known when porcelain production began here, but white porcelain is said to have been produced until around 1900. Most of the ware fired here consisted of everyday vessels for common use, such as plain white porcelain and bowls, soup bowls, rice bowls and ritual vessels fired on supports made of a mixture of sand and clay. The Jangheung Joseon white porcelain kiln site retains the original form of the kilns as they were at the time, making it important material for studying and understanding how the kilns were operated, used and constructed.
