King Danjong Placenta Chamber Site, Sacheon
사천 단종 태실지 · 泗川 端宗 胎室地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of a placenta chamber (taesil) that once enshrined the placenta of King Danjong (r. 1452–1454), the sixth king of Joseon. Based on Daoist thought, which held the placenta to be the source of a person's body, and on geomantic theory, the Joseon royal court established a Taesil dogam (Office for Placenta Chambers) to bury the placenta whenever a prince or princess was born. An auspicious site was sought for enshrining the placenta, and an official called an antaesa was dispatched to install it there. In particular, the placenta chambers of princes or royal grandsons who were to succeed to the throne were fitted with a stone chamber for storage. The site of Danjong's placenta chamber is now occupied by civilian graves; only the placenta-chamber stele erected in 1733, the ninth year of King Yeongjo, and some of the chamber's stones have been gathered together and are now protected.
