Dolmens are representative tombs of the Bronze Age, known mainly as the graves of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table-style, in which four support stones are set upright to form a stone chamber with a huge flat capstone placed on top, and the go-board-style, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small support stones set beneath a capstone placed above. This dolmen stands in a field at a low elevation of about 15 m above sea level, at the end of a main ridge running down from the north side of Goryeosan Mountain, midway along the road between Bugeun-ri and Mangwol-ri, beyond the boundary between Songhae-myeon and Hajeom-myeon, along National Route 48 from Ganghwa-eup towards Inhwa-ri. The support stones had tilted and collapsed, but the dolmen has now been restored to its original form. It stands upright in an east–west orientation with a huge capstone on top, in the typical form of a table-style dolmen, and since the closing stone on its north side survives without loss, the Jeomgol Dolmen is a valuable site for understanding the structure and form of dolmens throughout the Ganghwa region, as well as of itself.
