Hoamsa is said to have been built during the Baekje period, though it is not known exactly when or by whom; it is called Hoamsa, meaning 'tiger rock temple', because a tiger's footprint remains on a rock beside the temple. The original temple site has since been occupied by private houses, so its exact former appearance is unknown; the Hoamsa that exists today is a recently built temple comprising a main hall, monks' quarters and a mountain-spirit shrine, among other buildings. The Hoamsa site is an important historic site, being one of the few among Baekje's many temple sites whose name and origin are known.
