Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDalcheongucheon is a well near a pavilion called Dalcheonjeong, in Saeteo Village, Oegam-ri, Buk-myeon, Changwon. It is said that Heo Mok, a Confucian scholar of King Sukjong's reign who served as Right State Councillor, carved a turtle-shaped stone with his own hands to make this well when he returned to his hometown and stayed at Dalcheonjeong; hence it came to be known as Dalcheongucheon, meaning "the turtle spring of Dalcheon," and the well itself is shaped like a turtle. It was built in a square form using large stones, with a broad, flat stone placed to one side to complete its turtle-like appearance. About 1km from here, in a valley on Cheonjusan Mountain, stands a rock on which Heo Mok personally carved the characters "Dalcheon-dong," and the valley has since been known as Dalcheondong Valley. Clear water is said to flow from the well even in times of drought, and it is still used by local residents as drinking water today.
