Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChoe Hang (1409-1474), a civil official of the early Joseon period, belonged to the Sakryeong Choe clan. As a scholar of the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon), he took part in the creation of Hunminjeongeum together with Sin Suk-ju, Bak Paeng-nyeon and Seong Sam-mun. He rendered distinguished service during the Gyeyu Coup of 1453 and was named a first-class meritorious subject, later rising to Chief State Councillor. Gifted in composition, he wrote many diplomatic documents and produced accessible annotations of various texts. Choe Hang's tomb stands alone; his wife, Lady Seo of the Dalseong Seo clan, is buried in a separate grave nearby. Among the stone furnishings at the tomb, only the stele at the entrance to the burial ground, the civil-official statues, and the grave marker date from the 15th century, while the other stone objects are modern reproductions. The stele takes the hayeopsu-bangbu form - a lotus-leaf-shaped head set on a square base - and was erected in 1479. Its inscription was composed by Choe Hang's brother-in-law, Seo Geo-jeong, and written in calligraphy by Seong Im, a renowned calligrapher of the day. Because the original inscription had become badly weathered over time, a new stele was erected beside it in 2003. The grave marker set up next to the burial mound also has a lotus-leaf-shaped (hayeopsu) head.
