This is the tomb of Sinjae Ju Se-bung (1495–1554), a civil official and great scholar of the early Joseon period. From childhood he was extremely filial and devoted to learning. After passing the civil service examination in 1522, the seventeenth year of King Jungjong, he held a series of official posts and became magistrate of Punggi in 1541, the thirty-sixth year of King Jungjong. In 1543, the thirty-eighth year of King Jungjong, he founded Baegundong Seowon, Korea's first Confucian academy, in the Punggi region — later renamed Sosuseowon Confucian Academy. In 1551, the sixth year of King Myeongjong, he became governor of Hwanghae-do and founded Suyang Seowon in Haeju, where he enshrined Choe Chung. After his death he was buried in his hometown in accordance with his last wishes, and the court posthumously granted him the post of Minister of Rites. His tomb is the round mound at the centre of the three graves, with a memorial tablet and offering table in front, and a stele and mangju (guardian pillars) beside it, all well preserved. On the square mangju pillars is carved a line from the Book of Songs — 'Who has no parents? Who is not the child of a person?' — which well illustrates his filial piety. The square tomb above the burial ground holds his father, Ju Mun-bo, and his mother, Lady Hwang of Changwon, buried together; it is surrounded by neatly finished boundary stones and an offering table, and the family genealogy is inscribed on the surface of the boundary stones. The round tomb below is that of his eldest nephew, Ju Jo.
