This is a fort built to block Japanese pirates (waegu) invading toward Busan and Jinhae from Tsushima Island in Japan. Following the Sampo Waeran incident in the fifth year of King Jungjong's reign (1510) and the Saryangjin Waebyeon incident in the thirty-ninth year of King Jungjong's reign (1544), discussions arose to station a garrison and troops here in defence. Accordingly, facilities were built to protect warships by filling the seabed with stones, and a fort was raised where naval troops could be stationed, to block the invasion of Japanese pirates. The wall is estimated to have originally run about 700m in circumference, but the surviving wall measures about 96m in circumference and 3.5m in height. There are gate sites on the west, south and north, where the wall was doubled on the outside to protect the gates; there is no gate on the east, where the wall was likewise doubled. At the sides of the gates and at points where the wall turns, the outer wall was similarly doubled, and a trench was dug around the wall to let water flow, forming a further defensive feature. It is excellent material for studying the construction style of a jinseong, a garrison fort built and manned with troops at a strategic military location in the mid-Joseon period.
