This stele was erected to commemorate the loyalty and righteousness of Kim Sang-yong, a civil official of the Joseon dynasty in the reign of King Injo. Kim Sang-yong (1561-1637), also known by his pen name Seonwon, passed the civil service examination in 1590, the 23rd year of King Seonjo, and went on to hold posts including Pandonnyeongbusa (chief of the Office of Royal Kinship), Minister of War, Minister of Rites, Minister of Personnel, Yudaejang (the commander left in charge of the capital when the king was absent), and Right State Councillor. When the Manchu invasion of 1636 broke out, he escorted the ancestral tablets of Jongmyo Shrine and accompanied the crown princess consort and the royal grandson in taking refuge on Ganghwado Island. When the fortress fell, he set fire to the gunpowder stored in the southern gate tower of the wall and died a martyr's death. The stele was raised to honour his loyalty, and his spirit tablet is enshrined at Chungnyeolsa Shrine in Seonwon-myeon. Two steles now stand side by side within the stele pavilion: one was erected in the reign of King Jeongjo by his seventh-generation descendant Kim Mae-sun, and the other was erected in 1700, the 26th year of King Sukjong, by his great-grandnephew Kim Chang-jip; the latter was discovered in 1976 while the pavilion was being moved to its present site.
