Guwan-dong Inlaid Celadon Kiln Site

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a kiln site within Gwangmyeong Farm in Guwan-dong, Daejeon, where a total of two kilns were confirmed. Kiln No. 1 is severely damaged by cultivation and land clearance, with only a little of the kiln body and the chimney floor remaining; the firebox and the ceiling and walls cannot be confirmed. Given that no deposits discarded during the kiln's period of use survive nearby, that the kiln walls are thin and only lightly fired, and that almost no trace of repair can be found in the cross-section of the collapsed ceiling, it appears that the kiln was either used for only a short period or was abandoned outright because of a structural defect. Kiln No. 2 survives almost intact, with its firebox, kiln body and chimney all remaining, and is far larger in scale than Kiln No. 1. In its construction, subsoil mixed with the clay of the underlying weathered granite soil was cut away and used as material to build up the kiln's outer wall. In particular, the subsoil around the firebox area was dug out in a deep, rounded shape to form the firebox. There are also more than ten traces of repair added to the inside of the ceiling, suggesting that a large quantity of pottery may have been produced here over a long period.
