An eupseong is a walled town built to protect the residents of a county or district while also serving military and administrative functions. This walled town, located in Okha-ri, Goheung-eup, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, was built with Juwolsan Mountain at its back. The practice of building walled towns on flat land began to appear from the early Joseon period. This fortress is thought to have been built around the time a garrison was established in Gwangyang-hyeon in 1395, the fourth year of King Taejo of Joseon, in order to defend against Japanese pirate raids. It appears to have undergone major repairs in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong's reign; originally it had yeojang, low parapets built along the top of the wall, and gokseong, small projecting walls built outside the gate to protect it. At present, solid walls about 6 m high and 4 m wide remain, together with an ongseong, a small enclosing wall built around a gate, about 7 m long. The site provides important material for the study of early Joseon-period fortress construction techniques.
