Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis group of buildings is a jeongnyeogak, a memorial gate built to honour seven members of the Jinyang Gang clan of the Joseon period for embodying the three cardinal virtues of loyalty, filial piety and chastity. Also known as the Samgangmun, the Gate of the Three Bonds, it consists of six buildings standing together in one place. The first gate honours Gang U, whose courtesy name was Baekgyu and pen name Moam. He was the great-grandson of Gang Hye, magistrate of Cheongpung, and a close associate of the scholar Nammyeong. Born in 1495, during the reign of King Yeonsangun, he passed the jinsa examination at Seonggyungwan, the state Confucian academy, in 1513. In 1517, on his mother's death, he kept vigil in a mourning hut. In 1744 he was honoured for filial piety, and in 1847 he was enshrined at Chunghyosa Shrine. The second gate honours his younger brother, Gang Seo, courtesy name Sukgyu, pen name Maegok, also a disciple of Nammyeong. Born in 1510, during the reign of King Jungjong, he passed the jinsa examination in 1537. In 1540, on his father's death, he mourned with such devotion that his health suffered. In 1544 he was honoured for filial piety. The third gate honours Gang Su-nam, courtesy name Insu, pen name Sawoljeong, son of Jinsa Gang Seo; his birth father held the military post of Chungsunwi. Born in 1552, during the reign of King Myeongjong, he lived and studied at Sawoljeong Pavilion on Dondaesan Mountain. In 1580 he passed the special (byeolsi) civil examination and served successively as royal secretary, jeonjeok, magistrate of Yangseong County, and jeongnang in the Boards of Taxation and War. In 1592 he went to war as an aide to Sim Dae, later honoured as Chungjang-gong, and on 18 October 1592 he died a martyr's death at Sangnyeong. On 28 August 1608 a royally ordered memorial rite was held for him and he was posthumously granted the office of Chief Royal Secretary. In 1609 he was posthumously granted the office of Vice Minister of the Board of Personnel, and in 1709 Minister of the Board of Personnel, with the posthumous title Chungnyeol. In 1712 the king personally inscribed the four characters 'Ilche jeongnyeo' for his memorial gate. On 18 October 1791 a royally ordered memorial rite was held for him at the royally chartered Pyojeolsa Shrine in Sangnyeong, and he was enshrined at Eogang Seowon in Jeonggok, Uiryeong. In 1909 Sawoljeong Pavilion was rebuilt in his honour. The fourth gate honours Gang Gi-ryong, courtesy name Eungmun, pen name Dongho, son of Jikjang Gang Bok-nam and a direct-line descendant of Jinsa Gang U. His year of birth is not recorded. He held the hereditary military rank of Jeollyeok-buwi. In 1592 he raised a righteous army and fought at Jinjuseong Fortress, dying a martyr's death at the end of June 1593. In 1847 he was enshrined at Chunghyosa Shrine together with his elder brother Chojeong-gong, and in 1861 he was posthumously granted the office of Third Counsellor of the Board of Personnel in recognition of his loyalty. The fifth gate, the Memorial Gate for the Virtuous Woman of the Heo Clan, honours the devotion of the Gimhae Heo clan woman, wife of Gang Si-ju. It is a gable-roofed building erected in 1882, the nineteenth year of Emperor Gojong's reign. The sixth gate honours Gang Jae-jung, courtesy name Geobo, pen name Sujae, the ninth-generation descendant of Jinsa Gang U. He and his wife were both exceptionally devoted to filial piety, and in 1905 he was honoured with a memorial for filial piety. The seventh gate honours Lady Jo of the Haman clan, the filial daughter-in-law and wife of the filial son Gang Jae-jung, and a descendant of Jo Yeo, one of the Saengyuksin, scholars who refused office in loyalty to the deposed king. Known as the Ssanghyo, or Twin Filial Piety, memorial, it was erected by royal command in 1869, the sixth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, to honour the filial devotion of Sujae-gong Gang Jae-jung and his wife.
