This temple site is located on the northwestern foot of Wolseongsan Mountain. Based on the account of Mireuk Seonhwa, the Maitreya boy-immortal, recorded in the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), Suwonsa Temple is thought to have been founded during the reign of King Wideok of Baekje (554–598). The temple site has now become farmland, and some of the stone materials from a pagoda remain. When the Gongju National Museum surveyed the site in 1967, a small pagoda, a bronze wind chime and stone Buddha heads were discovered. Gongju Suwonsa Temple Site is an important historic site, being a Baekje temple whose existence is documented in historical records.
