A beacon station was a traditional means of communication using fire and smoke to convey urgent news: signal fires were lit on high mountains, sending signals by smoke during the day and by firelight at night. Yeongdeok Daesosan Mountain Beacon Station was one of the stations that relayed news of the situation around Chuksanpo in Yeongdeok all the way to Namsan Mountain in Seoul. It was linked southward to Byeolban Beacon Station, northward to Hurisan Mountain Beacon Station in Pyeonghae, and westward, via Gwangsan Beacon Station, to Namgaksan Mountain Beacon Station in Jinbo. A defensive wall was built at the summit of the mountain, and within it a beacon mound 11m in diameter and 3.5m high was constructed. The beacon station retains a relatively clear form and is valued as good material for understanding the communication methods of the Joseon period.
