강화 건평돈대 · 江華 乾坪墩臺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA battery (dondae) is a lookout post built at a point commanding a clear view of a border or coastal area within the country's territory, used to observe enemy movements and prepare against attack. It was usually built on raised, level ground, with the outer wall built high and the interior kept low, and cannons installed inside. This battery belonged to Jeongpo-bo garrison and is said to have served both as a watch post over the ships carrying tax grain (joun) that were sent on to the Six Ministries, and as a facility for national defence. It is said to have been built in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong of Joseon, when Yun I-je, then Governor of Ganghwa, established it on the order of Kim Seok-ju, the Minister of War.
