Amakseong Fortress
아막성 · 阿莫城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA stone-walled mountain fortress on the Ayeong Plateau in Ayeong-myeon, Namwon. The Ayeong Plateau is bounded by the ridgelines of the Unbong Plateau and Hwangsan, and this area was known in Baekje as Amaksan and in Silla as Mosanseong; it was the site of fierce struggles for control between Baekje and Silla. The fortress wall runs 632.8m in circumference, and the sites of the east, west and north gates survive. The northern wall section survives intact, running almost straight for 150.7m, with a gate site where water drained out. The eastern wall is almost straight and 147.1m long, the western wall is 126.9m long, and the curving southern wall is 208.1m long. At the point where the southern wall meets the ridgeline, a ring-shaped moat (hwanho) was dug so that water could flow through. Fragments of Three Kingdoms-period roof tiles and Baekje-style pottery have been found inside the fortress, and to the east of the drainage point at the north gate site is a circular well, 1.5m in diameter, built of stone.
