This is a shrine enshrining the spirit tablet of General Sin Yu (1619–1680), a military official of the mid-Joseon period. Sin Yu passed the military examination in 1646, the twenty-fourth year of King Injo, and subsequently held a succession of official posts. While serving as deputy military commander of North Hamgyeong Province, he led an army at the request of Qing China and, in 1658, the ninth year of King Hyojong, won a great victory near the Heilong (Amur) River, defeating ten Russian ships and more than 270 Russian soldiers. This campaign is known as the Naseon Expedition, and General Sin Yu left an account of it for later generations in a diary titled Bukjeong-ilgi (Diary of the Northern Campaign). As the earliest contact between Korea and Russia, and as a record written by the commanding officer on the ground, the Bukjeong-ilgi is valued as a document of world-historical significance.
