남대문로 지하배수로 · 南大門路 地下排水路

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNamdaemullo Jihabaesuro is divided into three sections: the Namdaemun-ro section, running from the Bank of Korea intersection towards Euljiro 1-ga; the Sogwangtonggyo section, flowing from west to east along Namdaemun-ro 9-gil, one block north of the Euljiro 1-ga intersection; and the Samgak-dong section, which joins the Sogwangtonggyo section at the stone embankment to its north. Of the roughly 550 m Namdaemun-ro section, running from the Bank of Korea intersection to the Sogwangtonggyo section, about 394 m survives, excluding some 112 m that was replaced with modern sewage pipe during construction of the Myeongdong Underground Shopping Centre, and about 44 m that was replaced with modern concrete Hume pipe during construction of Seoul Subway Line 2 in the 1980s. This surviving stretch is further divided into an upstream section south of the Myeongdong Underground Shopping Centre and a downstream section to the north. The Sogwangtonggyo section is built of stone embankments 27.3 m long and 6.0 m wide, with two pier structures standing like walls between the embankments, running east–west parallel to the channel. Where the southern stone embankment meets the Namdaemun-ro section, an entrance was formed in stone. The Samgak-dong section is a drainage channel connected to the northern stone embankment of the Sogwangtonggyo section, estimated at about 20 m in length. Its walls are built of brick, and its ceiling is finished with granite.
