A battery (dondae) is a lookout post built at points along a border or coastline within a country's territory that are easy to observe, so as to monitor enemy movement or prepare against attack. It is usually raised on elevated flat ground, with the outer wall built high and the interior kept low to house cannon. Belonging to the Jeongpo-bo garrison, this battery is roughly oval in plan and has four gun emplacements for mounting cannon. It is said to have been built in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong of Joseon, while Yun I-je was serving as Yusu, the commissioner of Ganghwa, on the orders of Kim Seok-ju, the Minister of War.
