Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site, spanning the Bronze Age to the Baekje period, lies on a low hill beside the main gate of Chungnam National University and was revealed through excavation by the Chungnam National University Museum in 1999. The remains identified there include 13 Bronze Age dwelling sites, 1 Early Iron Age pit tomb, 16 Proto-Three Kingdoms period pit tombs, and, from the Baekje period, 1 jar-coffin tomb, 3 tunnel-entrance stone chamber tombs, and 28 stone-lined tombs. The excavation of the Bronze Age settlement found, side by side, rectangular dwellings of the early Bronze Age, characterised by Garak-dong-style pottery with double-rimmed mouths and short diagonal-line patterns and by rectangular house plans, and dwellings of the middle Bronze Age, characterised by Songguk-ri-style pottery and round house plans, providing important evidence for tracing the transition in Bronze Age culture. Clay-strip-rim pottery (jeomtodae pottery) and black burnished pottery (heukdo) were also recovered from the pit tombs. A similar example is found at the neighbouring Noeun-dong Site, where two pit tombs containing clay-strip-rim pottery as grave goods were recently investigated, suggesting a close cultural relationship in period and distribution. Most of the Proto-Three Kingdoms period pit tombs have a surrounding ditch (jugu) cut into the slope above the main burial chamber; two are joint burials, and in some cases a jar coffin was placed within the surrounding ditch. This type of burial, known as representative of the Mahan period, was confirmed here for the first time in the Daejeon region. Investigation of the Baekje-period tombs uncovered a variety of burial types, including tunnel-entrance stone chamber tombs, side-entrance and pit-type stone coffin tombs, and jar-coffin tombs, yielding valuable archaeological data for understanding the character of the social groups of the time and the state of their society. In particular, the tunnel-entrance stone chamber tombs of the Baekje Sabi period, together with the Proto-Three Kingdoms period ditch-surrounded pit tombs, were the first of their kind investigated in the Daejeon region and are of high value as source material.
