Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site where the Joseon army, led by Deputy Commander Sin Gak, won its first land victory over Japanese forces during the Imjin War, the Japanese invasions of Korea that began in 1592. Haeyuryeong is a pass on local road 360, which runs from Gwangjeok-myeon in Yangju to Gwangtan-myeon in Paju; it is also known as 'Genemi-gogae.' When the Imjin War broke out in 1592 (the twenty-fifth year of King Seonjo), Sin Gak, serving as deputy commander under Commander-in-Chief Kim Myeong-won, defended the Hangang River. When the Hangang defence line collapsed, however, Sin Gak went together with Yi Yang-won, the commander left in charge of the capital, to Yangju, where they regrouped the scattered soldiers. Reinforced by troops obtained from Yi Hon, the military commander of Hamgyeong Province, they engaged the vanguard of the advancing Japanese army at Haeyuryeong and won a great victory. However, Kim Myeong-won, who had retreated to the Imjingang River, wrongly judged that Sin Gak had fled together with Yi Yang-won and reported this mistaken account to the king, and as a result Sin Gak was put to death unjustly. In 1977, a monument 10.6 metres high, the Haeyuryeong Battle Victory Stele, was erected to commemorate the victory at Haeyuryeong and to honour the loyal spirit of General Sin Gak, who had died so unjustly.
