In Chon Birthplace
인촌선생생가 · 仁村先生生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of In Chon Kim Seong-su (1891–1955), who served as the second Vice President of the Republic of Korea. It is also the birthplace of In Chon's younger brother, Sudang Kim Yeon-su, a leading figure in fostering Korean-owned national capital. Kim Seong-su founded the Gyeongseong Spinning and Weaving Company and the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper, and established Bosung College, the forerunner of Korea University. The main house's women's quarters (anchae) and men's quarters (sarangchae), together with the smaller house's anchae, were built by their grandfather Kim Yo-hyeop; the gate quarters of the main house's sarangchae were built in 1893, the 30th year of Emperor Gojong, by Kim Gi-jung, In Chon's adoptive father. The smaller house's sarangchae was built in 1903 by their father, Kim Gyeong-jung. In the spring of 1907, following the depredations of bandit gangs then sweeping the area, the family moved to what is now Julpo-ri, Julpo-myeon, Buan-gun, entrusting the house to local villagers for its preservation; in August 1977 Sudang Kim Yeon-su had it restored at his own expense to its original appearance and also built a 5 m-wide access road. This house carries deep significance, allowing visitors to reflect together on the lifelong devotion to the nation and people of Kim Seong-su and Kim Yeon-su, two figures who left a great mark on modern Korean history.
