An eupseong is a walled town built to protect the residents of a county or district while serving both military and administrative functions. Gijang Walled Town was built spanning a low hill to the north and flat land to the south. The wall is about 1,000 m long and 4 m high. On level ground it was built of stone on both its outer and inner faces, while on higher terrain the outer face was built of stone and the interior filled with earth and rubble. The east, west and south gates were each protected by an ongseong, a semicircular outer wall shielding the gate, and near the site of the east gate stands a jeokdae, a raised bastion for defence. Inside the walls stood Dongheon, where the magistrate attended to official business, along with Hyangsadang and Guest Houses, while outside the walls stood Mangpungjeong Pavilion and a watchtower, but today only Janggwancheong remains. The wall was built in 1356, the fifth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, and was repaired on numerous occasions down to the Joseon period.
