A battery (dondae) is a lookout post set up at a point offering easy surveillance, in a border area or coastal region within the territory, to observe enemy movements and prepare against attack. It is usually built on high, level ground, with the outer wall built up high like a fortress wall and the interior kept low, where cannon were installed. This battery measures 2.2m high with a perimeter of 128m; its wall was built of stone in a rectangular plan, with four gun emplacements (pojwa, cannon positions) set facing the coast. On top of the wall only traces remain of a low parapet that once let defenders conceal themselves. The entrance is distinctive among batteries for having an arched, rainbow-shaped top. It was built in 1679, the fifth year of King Sukjong of Joseon, when Yun I-je served as Yu Su (governor) of Ganghwa, and was placed under the administration of Janggotbo.
