Jangan-dong White Porcelain Kiln Site
장안동백자가마터 · 壯安洞白磁窯址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis white porcelain kiln site, located at the entrance to Jangtaesan Recreational Forest, is not fully intact, but its structure can be traced from the firebox to the chimney. Overall it is shaped like an open fan, with the firing chamber wider at the top than at the bottom. Partitions were installed partway along the firing chamber to control the flames and support the ceiling, each closely set with eight or nine fire-bars, holes for the passage of flame. The wares, glazed and fired in a single firing without a preliminary biscuit firing, using the stacked-firing method, are mainly typical everyday vessels such as white porcelain bowls, dishes and small cups. Some examples were found with separately made foot rings attached, and underglaze iron wares decorated with motifs such as foliage and flowers were also produced. Joseon white porcelain developed along two main lines: production centred on official kilns, and regional white porcelain. After the Japanese invasions of 1592–98 disrupted the official production system, attention shifted from improving quality to mass production, and many small kilns came to operate in the regions. The Jangan-dong kiln likewise appears to have focused on mass production rather than improved quality, and typifies the regional white porcelain aimed at consumers in the south-western Daejeon area at the time. A kiln showing similar characteristics in structure and artefacts is known at the white porcelain kiln site in Hugok-ri, Songgwang-myeon, Seungju-gun, South Jeolla Province, and this is the first 17th-century kiln site identified to date in the Daejeon and South Chungcheong region.
