Dolmens are representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also called goindol, and are known chiefly as the graves of a ruling class who held economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table-type, in which four supporting stones are set upright to form a stone chamber topped with a massive flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small supporting stones set beneath the capstone. On a hill known as 'Baujae' or 'Soeul' in Sanjik-ri, Chocho-myeon, Buyeo-gun, South Chungcheong Province, two dolmens stand side by side, oriented east–west. The capstone of the eastern dolmen measures 5.8m in length and 3.7m in width; its lower structure has been completely dug up and cannot be determined, but it is presumed to be of the go-board type. At present the eastern and northern supporting stones are exposed, and some appear to have been broken away and removed elsewhere. The capstone of the western dolmen measures about 5.8m in length and about 4.2m in width, and no supporting stones are visible. Because its capstone remains level and there is no burial structure beneath it, this dolmen is presumed to have served as an altar for rituals.
