Maitreya Wonji — the site of a won, a charitable lodging house for travellers — was established at the end of Goryeo by Hwang Yun-bo, and continued to be run through the accumulated charitable works (jeokseon) of the Hoedeok Hwang clan from the close of Goryeo into the early Joseon period. It functioned as a private institution that expanded from relief work for travellers into broader social organisation and charitable activity, making it Daejeon's earliest example of a social welfare facility. Its standing can also be gauged from the commemorative verses (jeyeonggi) composed in its honour by leading political, scholarly and literary figures of the age, including Yi Saek, Ha Ryun, Byeon Gye-ryang, Jeong In-ji and Song Si-yeol. Together with the ideals of 'a pure breeze and bright moon' and a spirit of righteous integrity, the warm-hearted generosity of the people of Daejeon — always ready to give to others — is one of this region's cherished local traditions, and this site stands as an important relic symbolising it.
