This site was a settlement of ancient peoples, located in the area now occupied by Ihwa Village and Gadan Village of Jungsan-ri. It is a settlement site formed from the late Samhan period through to the late Three Kingdoms period, representative of the region north of the Taehwagang River. A trial excavation carried out by the Ulsan Development Institute in 2002 identified dwellings, workshops and defensive facilities, yielding detailed information on the settlement's composition, extent, layout, exchange with neighbouring regions, and the process of its change over time. It illustrates the process by which Saro-guk grew into Silla, making it an important site for the study of early Silla. It is presumed that the people of this settlement were the very people who built the adjacent Jungsandong Tumuli (a Monument), and that they kept the living space of the living separate from the realm of the dead. Moreover, among the tools they used, the iron implements appear to have been made from iron produced at the Dalcheon Ironworks (a Monument), a leading iron-producing site of the period.
