Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNogangseowon Confucian Academy was founded to commemorate the scholarship and virtuous conduct of the Joseon civil official Park Tae-bo (1654–1689); it is one of the forty-seven Confucian academies that survived Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing such academies. Park Tae-bo was the second son of Park Se-dang (pen name Seogye). After coming first in the state examination in 1677, the third year of King Sukjong, he held posts including Busuchan (Second Counsellor), Jipyeong (Censor) and secret royal inspector. In 1689, the fifteenth year of King Sukjong, after Queen Inhyeon was deposed, he joined Yi Se-hwa and O Du-in in opposing the decision, and died at Noryangjin while being exiled to Jindo Island. After his death his scholarship and loyalty were highly regarded: he was posthumously granted the office of Chief State Councillor and given the posthumous title 'Munyeol'. Nogangseowon was founded in 1695, the twenty-first year of King Sukjong, at the foot of a hill west of the tombs of the Six Martyred Ministers (Sayuksin). Two years later, following a petition by Jo Yun-byeok and others, it received the name 'Nogang', and it was rebuilt in 1754, the thirtieth year of King Yeongjo. After being destroyed in the Korean War, it was restored in 1968 at its present site on Suraksan Mountain. The compound's buildings include the shrine, the east and west dormitories (dongjae and seojae), a caretaker's quarters (gojiksa) and a gate, but there is no separate lecture hall for teaching. The shrine, which enshrines Park Tae-bo's spirit tablet, measures three bays across the front and two bays deep, with a gabled roof (matbae) forming the shape of the character 人 when seen from the side. The east and west dormitories, fitted with underfloor-heated (ondol) rooms where students lived while studying, each measure three bays across the front and one bay deep, with a narrow wooden veranda (toenmaru) at the front. Memorial rites are held every year in the third and ninth lunar months.
