Seonjidang was the home of Kim Ja-su, the founding figure who revived the Gyeongju Kim clan and who served as Governor of Chungcheong Province in the late Goryeo period, and of his grandson Kim Yeong-nyeon. Kim Ja-su passed the state civil service examination in 1374, the twenty-third year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, and rose through several official posts, but he later resigned and withdrew into seclusion in his hometown of Andong. After the founding of Joseon, King Taejong offered him the post of Minister of Punishments, but he declined it, and, leaving his descendants instructions never to build a grave for him, he took his own life. His grandson Kim Yeong-nyeon served as magistrate of Gangneung during the reign of King Munjong (r. 1450–1452), and after retiring from office he devoted himself, at Seonjidang, to training younger scholars, producing many talented men. Seonjidang has a structure of five bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof whose gable end takes the shape of the character 八 (eight). It still preserves the wooden signboard for Seonjidang, written in the hand of Kim No-gyeong during the reign of King Sunjo (r. 1800–1834), and a piece of calligraphy by Kim Jeong-hui reading 長宜子孫, meaning roughly 'may prosperity long extend to one's descendants.' Within the site stands the Jeonghyo Stele Pavilion of the Kim family, erected in 1720, the first year of King Gyeongjong, to honour the brothers Kim Eun and Kim Chu, who were renowned for their filial devotion during the reign of King Injo (r. 1623–1649). It has a structure of two bays across the front and one bay to the side, with a gable roof whose side takes the shape of the character 人 (person).
