This seodang, a village school, was founded by Jo Mok (pen name Wolcheon, 1524–1606) to train younger scholars. Jo Mok studied under Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye) and passed the saengwon examination in 1552, the seventh year of King Myeongjong, but declined a succession of official posts, choosing instead to remain close to Yi Hwang and devote himself entirely to scholarship. During the Japanese invasions of 1592, he raised a righteous army together with his younger brother and his two sons, and he is the only one of Yi Hwang's disciples to be enshrined in the Sangdeoksa Shrine of Dosanseowon Confucian Academy. This school, built in 1539, the 34th year of King Jungjong, measures four bays across the front and two bays along the side, and is covered by a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof, which forms the shape of the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. The two centre bays form a wooden-floored hall, flanked on either side by ondol-heated rooms. The signboard reading 'Wolcheon Seodang' is in Yi Hwang's own handwriting.
