Tumuli in Nopo-dong
노포동 고분군 · 老圃洞 古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are tombs from the late Proto-Three Kingdoms period, located at the foot of a hillside 60–80m above sea level in Geumjeong-gu, Busan. Academic excavation confirmed two dwelling sites from the Mumun (plain) pottery period, forty-five pit tombs, six jar-coffin tombs, and wooden-chamber tombs. The tomb remains were formed by cutting through the dwelling-site remains, and appear to have been created under the influence of foreign culture. A total of 834 artefacts were excavated, including 134 pieces of pottery, 263 iron implements, 433 beads, and 4 stone implements. Among the pottery, grey unglazed earthenware predominates, but the appearance of stoneware indicates the period when such stoneware first emerged. The Nopo-dong remains are divided into an early and a late phase based on the tombs and excavated artefacts, the criteria being the appearance of large wooden-chamber tombs, ring-pommel long swords, the diversification and increase of iron implements, the development of forging techniques, and the emergence of stoneware. The early phase is dated to the mid-third century, while the late phase, presumed to hold the graves of the ruling class, dates from the late third to early fourth century. Through the adoption of foreign culture, the Nopo-dong remains show the growth and change of society in the Busan region, and are important remains that shed light on the emergence and development of early states.
