Gongju Gongsanseong Fortress Yeonji
공주공산성연지 · 公州公山城蓮池

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is one of the ponds within Gongsanseong Fortress. Built of neatly tiered stonework, it is wider at the top, measuring up to 21m in length (east–west) and 12m in width, and narrower at the bottom, up to 9m in length and 4m in width, giving it the overall shape of an inverted stone pagoda. On the south-west side, finely dressed stones were laid two abreast to form around ten steps, creating a passage for access. The floor was paved with flat stones, and a 40cm-wide drainage channel was installed along the east and west walls to let water flow freely. The pond is presumed to have been in continuous use since the Baekje period. Notably, the excavation of an an-mun leading to the pond — a concealed gate built at a point not easily seen from the fortress wall, allowing secret passage in and out — makes this an important source of information for studying the structure of the mountain fortress.
