Toegye Head House
퇴계종택 · 退溪宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye, 1501–1570), a civil official and great scholar of the mid-Joseon period. The original house no longer survives; this building was newly constructed between 1926 and 1929 by Hajeong-gong, Yi Hwang's 13th-generation descendant, following the scale of the old house. It is a square, mieum-shaped house measuring six bays across the front and five bays along the side, comprising 34 bays in total. It was built on a high stone platform using both round and square pillars, and has a raised soldaemun gate, a taller central gate typical of upper-class houses, at the front. To the right stands the Chuwolhansujeong, a pavilion measuring three bays across the front and two bays along the side, in whose hall hangs a signboard reading 'Dohagyeonwonbang'.
