Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a prehistoric site, a representative dwelling that made direct use of a cave formed by the volcanic activity of Jeju Island. It is known locally as 'Godugi Eongdeok' — eongdeok meaning the space beneath a rock overhang — indicating that the shaded area under the rock served as the living space. The space beneath the rock has a frontage 11m wide, 2.5m high and 3m deep, with its entrance facing due south to catch plenty of sunlight. Inside the cave a flat area of large rock opens out, part of which was levelled with small stones; in this gravel-covered area charcoal, pottery, grinding stones, shells and tree fruit were found. Several cultural layers from different periods were identified at the site. In the lowest layer, transformed comb-pattern pottery of the late Neolithic period was unearthed, showing that people had lived there from early times, and the site appears to have continued in intermittent use as a dwelling through the Bronze Age and into the Tamna period.
