This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Kim Jeong, pen name Chungam (1486–1520). Kim Jeong was a civil official and scholar of the early Joseon period who served as Vice Minister of Personnel and Inspector-General before rising to Minister of Justice. He was also skilled in painting and poetry, and together with Jo Gwang-jo he is known as one of the leading figures of the Sarim, the literati faction. The academy was established in 1555, the tenth year of King Myeongjong, as Samnyeonseong Seowon, and in 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun, it received official state recognition as a saek seowon, an academy granted a royal name-plaque, under the name Sanghyeon. In 1672, the 13th year of King Heonjong, it was relocated to its present site, and Seong Un, Seong Je-won, Jo Heon, and Song Si-yeol were additionally enshrined there. It was closed in 1871, the eighth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies, then rebuilt in 1896 under the name Jangnyewon, and was dismantled and restored in 1986, bringing it to its present form. When the academy was closed under the abolition order, its lecture hall was moved to Boeun Hyanggyo, the local state Confucian school, and has since been used as its Myeongnyundang, the hall used for instruction at a hyanggyo. Built with a low hill at its back, the academy consists of a small shrine, a bigak, a pavilion housing a memorial stele, and an entrance gate. On entering the main gate, the bigak, measuring one kan across the front and one kan along the side, stands to the left, and behind it is the shrine, enclosed by its own separate wall. In the shrine, the spirit tablet of Kim Jeong is enshrined at the centre, flanked on either side by the spirit tablets of Seong Un, Seong Je-won, Jo Heon, and Song Si-yeol. It stands on a platform built of natural stone, and its roof is a gabled roof shaped like the character in (人) when viewed from the side. Memorial rites are held every year in the second and eighth lunar months.
