Hyogamcheon Stream
효감천 · 孝感泉

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis spring is said to have appeared in 1473, the fourth year of King Seongjong of Joseon, when Heaven was moved by the utmost sincerity of Oh Jun (1444–1494), a man renowned for his filial devotion. Such was his filial piety that when his mother fell gravely ill, he cut his finger and let her drink his blood to keep her alive, and when she suffered from a festering boil, he sucked out the pus with his own mouth until she recovered. When she died, he buried her at the foot of Chwiryeongsan Mountain and built a mourning hut there, keeping watch over her grave for the mourning period. Moved by his devotion, a tiger is said to have brought a deer to the offering table every evening. As there was no spring nearby, he had to cross the fields to fetch water from Susan for the ancestral offerings. One day, Heaven, taking pity on his hardship, sent a sudden clap of thunder and a bolt of lightning, and a spring welled up beneath the mourning hut. The water was so clear and pure that people drew it for daily use, and when the county magistrate came and saw this, he had stones piled up beside the spring and erected a memorial stone; later generations called it Gamcheon. In 1748, the twenty-fourth year of King Yeongjo, Changhyosa Shrine was built, and his descendants have held memorial rites there every spring and autumn ever since.
