Dolsanpyeongsarigoni Wintering Ground

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe swan is a winter migratory bird that breeds in summer in the food-rich tundra regions of the north, then in autumn flies south to escape the cold, wintering along Korea's Donghae (East Sea) and Namhae (South Sea) coasts before returning north again in spring. In Korea it winters together with flocks of whooper swans, living mainly on lakes, reservoirs, rivers and coasts. Together with the whooper swan and the black swan, it is generally known simply as baekjo, or swan. The Dolsanpyeongsarigoni Wintering Ground lies on the Guljeon coast of Dolsan Island, an area well known for its oyster farms. Each year in late autumn some 50 to 150 swans arrive and remain here until they set off north again at the end of February or beginning of March of the following year. The swan is a rare winter bird whose numbers are falling sharply owing to the development and pollution of its habitat, and for this reason the swan wintering ground at Dolsan Pyeongsa-ri has been designated a monument to protect it.
