Donggosanseong is a mountain fortress built during the Unified Silla period; it took its present name after the fortress on the mountain opposite came to be called Namgosanseong during the reign of King Sunjo of Joseon. Tradition has long held that this was the site of the palace of King Gyeonhwon, founder of Hubaekje (Later Baekje). Raising the banner of Baekje's restoration, King Gyeonhwon occupied Wansanju in the fourth year of King Hyogong of Silla (900) and made his capital here, which endured for thirty-seven years. Excavations in 1990 uncovered a building site 22 bays (84.4 m) across the front and 3 bays (16.1 m) deep, 66 bays in total (11,180 ㎡) — the largest single building site ever excavated in Korea — which supports the claim that this was King Gyeonhwon's palace. Though the building itself has vanished and only its foundation remains, this is a place where, across the centuries, one can still feel the footsteps of Gyeonhwon, the turbulent hero who founded Hubaekje.
