KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A shell midden (貝塚) is a site formed by the accumulation of shells discarded by ancient people, who lived by hunting, fishing and gathering, after eating shellfish, together with other household waste; it is also called a shell mound. The Naedong shell midden in Changwon is located on a low hill, 20–25 metres above sea level, beside a main road in Changwon. As no formal excavation has yet been carried out, its precise character remains unknown, but the artefacts collected suggest it dates to the early Iron Age, around the turn of the Common Era, the same period as the nearby Seongsan and Gaeumjeong-dong shell middens. Although a full-scale investigation of the Naedong shell midden has not yet been conducted, such middens elsewhere have yielded a variety of pottery, bone and antler tools, and iron artefacts, making them valuable sites for studying life at the time; it has therefore been designated a monument and preserved.
